SPORT can be cruel and that was certainly the case for our senior side at the Corbet Field on Saturday afternoon.
Having worked their socks off and stuck to a well-observed game plan for the 90 minutes, Rangers were sunk in controversial circumstances.
There was no denying the penalty which gave Vale skipper Glenn Le Tissier the chance to steal the points, but it seemed very harsh to give Le Tissier a second crack after stand-in keeper Adam Gontier had superbly saved the first effort, flying to his right.
Alerted by his assistant that the keeper had come away from his line, the ref awarded a re-take and this time Gontier flew to his left while Le Tissier went down the middle.
Video of the incident hardly suggests any wrong doing by our veteran No 2 keeper who had performed so well while standing for the still ailing but thankfully recovering Seb Sheppard.
But that decision made all the difference and Rangers got nothing but admiration for their resolute work both from watchers and head coach Chris Tardif.
‘I can’t do anything but praise the lads performance,’ said Tardif.
‘I can’t tell you how gutted I am for the boys not to even take a point.’
Given we were without several key men, including the injured skipper Joe Clatworthy, it was a great effort by the boys who often threatened on the break.
And almost half the team were back in the red and black stripes the following morning as the U18s took on and convincingly defeated Rovers U17s 5-2 to jump into second place in the table.
George Goubert (pictured) and Zac Batiste both grabbed braces and there was a terrific headed goal by Leon Solano who got on the end of Tom Solway’s free-kick given for a naughty challenge on our skipper, Jacques Cauvin.
Rangers might easily have won far more comfortably but we passed up numerous clear chances and both George and Zac will be disappointed not to have bagged hat-tricks.
Shane Burtenshaw’s team featured a number of U16s and Solano was one of them who showed they are perfectly at home in this age-group.
Charlie Le Lacheur looked very sound as he came into the midfield just before half time and Pearce Le Poidevin worked hard on the right.
All in all, it proved a strong weekend for the club.
The U14s, who of course are really U13s, won 4-0 against Sylvans having run up a 3-0 interval lead.
Thomas Holt gave them a seventh minute lead and Cole Steer grabbed himself a brace before half time.
In the second half Sam Tanner completed the scoring and the group were back together the following day in
sweeping aside Vale Rec Green 6-2 to further consolidate top spot in the table.
This time around Shay Le Poidevin grabbed himself a hat-trick, including a first minute strike that put us on our way to another win, the side’s eighth straight success which enables Red to open up an eight-point gap.
Charlie Jamouneau, Charlie Bolger and Barnaby Groves also netted.
In a late kick-off today , Rangers Black U13s we’re also in action.
Meanwhile, our Veterans damaged St Martin’s title prospects by holding Saints to a 2-2 draw at St Andrew’s.
Dave Parrott levelled the score at 1-1 and South African Shinguy put us 2-1 up in a game refereed by our own Adam Gontier who stepped in after the appointed official did not show.
But Saints, who had earlier missed a penalty, levelled with another spot-kick a couple of minutes from the end. Yet, there was still time for super-veteran Paul Ockleford who push forward and hit the post, coming so close to winning us the game.
