Northerners 1 Rangers 1
YOU have to go back the best part of two decades since the old red and blacks last secured a youth League title.
Ross Allen, no less, was part of that successful team.
But the drought is over.
At Northfield this morning Northerners, our oldest rivals in Guernsey football, sportingly made a human tunnel as Rangers marched forward to lift the U13s trophy and receive their medals from Ravenscroft representative Katrina Bray.
There was delight and relief in equal measure, North having given us a real for our money in what was our third game in five days.
But with just a point required to secure the trophy, we got the early goal we wanted and after North equalised with a fine Wilf Dorrian goal, hung on.
With time all but up Dorrian again went through but keeper Chevy Palzeaird made a super tip-over save to keep the game at 1-1.
In truth, a North goal would have been harsh on Rangers, who having not played particularly well in the first period, dominated the second half with the breeze now at their backs.
In that second 35 minutes there were many occasions Rangers looked like scoring, but did not.
Twice, North hacked off the line with the keeper beaten and Barney Groves struck the crossbar with a well-hit volley.
North, though, were always dangerous on the break, notably through Dorrian, the fastest player on the pitch bar, perhaps, our Samir Sesay who again shone while playing up a year from Corbet Cup level.
Sesay scored a cracker in the first two minutes after great approach work by Austin Nobes, to set us on our way, but thereafter the striker was often was left isolated.
Coaches Mark Bousfield and Stewart Moyles rung the changes in the hope of getting the team to click into their best football, but on a pitch, bumpy down the middle, ball control and good passing in the central third was no easy.
There were good performances across the pitch for Rangers, notably keeper Chevy, full backs Ethan Bruce-Davies and the tenacious Taylan Mills, but star of the show was centre half James Evans who along with Bruce-Davies had to work hard to keep Dorrian in check.
So, after 15 League games, Rangers Red end the league season unbeaten, with 13 wins and two draws.
But with the Rangers Black U13s squad also continuing to develop impressively, the title winning team will have to fight hard for their spots as they all step up into the U14s next season.
Rangers Black have been excellent too, a highlight being their own win over Northerners. Given the sky blues’ talent that was a terrific effort.
For Rangers as a whole, the trophy gives us added impetus to an already thriving youth group.
Let us not let it be another 17 years before we lift the cup again.
